Rendered in warm terracotta, ochre and umber tones, the composition has an intimate, sculptural quality, with the artist's confident, painterly brushwork building depth and texture across the figure and background alike.

The pose is quietly dramatic, with the raised arms and curved spine forming a strong diagonal line that draws the eye through the piece. Spain's layered application of colour and tone gives the skin a warm, almost glowing luminosity, while the loosely worked background of ochre and rust hues lends the whole composition atmosphere and movement.

Presented in a substantial gilt frame with a wide mount, this large-scale figurative work would make an elegant and thought-provoking addition to any collection, characteristic of Spain's acclaimed body of figurative studies.

About the Artist

Mark Spain (b. 1962) trained in technical graphics at Medway College of Art and Design, studying illustration, life drawing and printmaking, before setting up his own printmaking studio in Kent to produce original etchings.

His figurative oil and mixed media paintings brought him wide recognition, and he was quickly signed to one of the UK's leading publishing houses, going on to win the Fine Art Trade Guild Award for Best Up and Coming Artist.
