About the artist:
Jerzy Marek (1925-2014) was a Polish-born, self-taught painter celebrated for his small-scale "naïve" or "primitive" art. After serving with the British Army and settling in the UK in 1948, he worked as a civil engineer before dedicating himself to painting full-time in the 1960s. Marek became a significant figure in the world of naïve art, founding a group known as the "Marek Circle" to encourage other artists in the Preston area. His work, often painted from memory, is known for its multi-layered paint application, giving his canvases a "velvety" appearance. He particularly favoured subjects such as pastoral scenes, domestic interiors, and close-up portraits of animals and people, and his work was exhibited internationally in cities including Glasgow, Paris, and Hamburg.
