About the artwork

This serene coastal painting by Mary Shaw captures the quiet poetry of twilight at the harbour. A lone boat rests at the water’s edge, its mast and rigging silhouetted against a skyline softened into shades of indigo and lavender. The distant city lights shimmer faintly, while white gulls sweep across the sky, lending movement to the tranquil scene. Shaw’s brushwork blends atmosphere and reflection with subtle precision, creating a composition that feels both contemplative and alive. Signed in the lower right, the work reflects her ability to evoke mood through colour harmony and gentle transitions, offering viewers a moment of stillness and reflection.

About the Artist

Mary Shaw is a self‑taught British painter whose delicate evocations of the English countryside have won her wide acclaim. Born in Bristol, where she still lives and works, Shaw demonstrated her artistic aptitude from childhood, completing her first commission at just thirteen. Her career took shape during four years in Zimbabwe and Cape Town, where she began establishing herself professionally before returning to the UK. Inspired by the hedgerows, meadows, and rare species of rural England, she developed a style that contrasts loosely painted organic foregrounds with exquisitely detailed depictions of wildflowers and wildlife. A hallmark of her work is the use of diamond dust, which lends an iridescent sparkle and contemporary twist to traditional pastoral scenes. Today, her originals and prints are represented by leading galleries and held in collections worldwide.
