About the artwork

This pastoral landscape by Mary Shaw unfolds with a gentle rhythm of colour and form. A field of scarlet blossoms dominates the foreground, its vibrancy softened by the surrounding greenery. At the heart of the composition, two small cows graze quietly, their presence grounding the scene in rural life and adding a touch of authenticity to the countryside setting. The distant trees rise softly against a pale sky, where birds drift overhead, suggesting openness and tranquillity. Shaw’s brushwork conveys both delicacy and confidence, and her palette of earthy greens and warm reds creates a harmonious balance between vitality and calm. The work invites viewers into a timeless vision of nature, where human absence allows the pastoral world to speak for itself.

About the Artist

Mary Shaw is a self‑taught British painter whose delicate evocations of the English countryside have won her wide acclaim. Born in Bristol, where she still lives and works, Shaw demonstrated her artistic aptitude from childhood, completing her first commission at just thirteen. Her career took shape during four years in Zimbabwe and Cape Town, where she began establishing herself professionally before returning to the UK. Inspired by the hedgerows, meadows, and rare species of rural England, she developed a style that contrasts loosely painted organic foregrounds with exquisitely detailed depictions of wildflowers and wildlife. A hallmark of her work is the use of diamond dust, which lends an iridescent sparkle and contemporary twist to traditional pastoral scenes. Today, her originals and prints are represented by leading galleries and held in collections worldwide.
