About the artist:
Michael Parkes (born 1944) is an American-born artist who is a prominent figure in the Magic Realism movement. He is known for his work in painting, sculpture, and particularly for his proficiency in stone lithography.
He studied graphic art and painting at the University of Kansas. Early in his career, he painted in the Abstract Expressionist style that was common among his teachers. However, after a period where he gave up art to travel to India in search of philosophical understanding, his style evolved significantly. He began to paint in a meticulous, detailed, and realistic style, but applied it to magical and fantastical subject matter, which became the defining characteristic of his work.
Parkes's art often draws on imagery from a range of traditions, including esoteric doctrines and mythology, but he embodies these in forms from his own imagination. He is known for creating dream-like scenes featuring strange creatures, mythical figures, and ethereal winged women. His works are collected by galleries and private collectors globally. His first solo exhibition was held in Amsterdam in 1977.
