Beautiful small oil painting attributed to Edoardo Tofano (Italian 1838-1920) - An oil on board portrait of a young lady dressed in white with a red flower in her hair, signed E Tofano lower right, indistinctly dated, image 23cm x 16.5cm also inscribed verso - Eduardo Tofano.

About the artist:
Eduardo Tofano (1838–1920) was an Italian painter, born in Naples and who died in Rome. He studied at the Albertina Academy of Turin and the Accademia Clementina in Bologna. He was a follower of the Realism of Domenico Morelli.

At the age of 23, in 1861, he became an instructor at the Art Institute of Naples, a position he held until 1864. He then resigned to create works for the Goupil Gallery in Paris, and was patronised by British collectors.

He painted historic, genre, and Orientalist subjects, as well as portraits. One of his most notable paintings, Enfin Seuls! (Finally Alone!), was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1878 and became highly popular, with reproductions appearing in various formats. Some of his other works include The cabin of Nelson and Donna con Ventaglio (Girl with Fan).
