About the Artwork

Midnight Over the Seine is a luminous nocturnal cityscape by Scottish artist Lesley Anne Derks, capturing the drama and romance of Paris at night. The glowing bridge, shimmering reflections and sweeping riverside architecture are rendered with Derks’ signature command of artificial light, transforming the city into a vibrant tapestry of colour and atmosphere. Paris after dark becomes a ribbon of black glass in the Seine, reflecting the warm amber streetlamps, illuminated façades and pockets of colour from bridges, boats and traffic; Derks distils that character into a single, cinematic view.

Her elevated viewpoint and rich palette of reds, golds and cool nocturnal tones give the work a strong sense of movement and energy, while the layered skyline of historic buildings and distant spires evokes the city’s mix of elegance and modern life. The interplay between water, light and architectural form is central to Derks’ practice, and Midnight Over the Seine showcases this beautifully, making it a striking centrepiece for contemporary interiors and a compelling choice for collectors of modern cityscapes and lovers of Parisian landmarks.

About the Artist

Lesley Anne Derks is a contemporary Scottish artist celebrated for her luminous cityscapes and architectural night scenes. Born in Falkirk and trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, she developed a distinctive visual language centred on the drama of artificial light within urban environments. Her work often explores iconic skylines such as London, Glasgow, Paris and New York, capturing the glow of streetlamps, reflections on water and the atmospheric haze of nightfall with a cinematic sensibility. Derks exhibits widely across the UK and beyond, with her paintings and limited edition prints held in private and corporate collections, and she is known for combining technical precision with an emotive, almost musical sense of rhythm and colour. Her ongoing practice continues to evolve around themes of light, architecture and the emotional resonance of the modern city.
