About the Artwork

This striking original mixed media study by Mark Spain captures a seated female nude viewed from behind, her arms raised as she gathers her hair. Rendered in warm terracotta, ochre and umber tones, the composition has an intimate, sculptural quality, with the artist's confident, painterly brushwork building depth and texture across the figure and background alike.

The pose is quietly dramatic, with the raised arms and curved spine forming a strong diagonal line that draws the eye through the piece. About the Artist

Mark Spain (b. 1962) trained in technical graphics at Medway College of Art and Design, studying illustration, life drawing and printmaking, before setting up his own printmaking studio in Kent to produce original etchings.

His figurative oil and mixed media paintings brought him wide recognition, and he was quickly signed to one of the UK's leading publishing houses, going on to win the Fine Art Trade Guild Award for Best Up and Coming Artist. He has exhibited extensively across the UK, including at the 20th Century British Art Fair and the Barbican Contemporary Print Fair, and has undertaken commissions for clients including NatWest and The Dorchester Hotel.

Spain's figurative work is admired for its atmosphere and movement, with his layered, painterly technique giving each subject a distinctive mood and presence. His paintings hang in galleries and private collections around the world, including in the United States, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and across Europe.
