About the Artwork
The Barbican Fishermen 2000 is a warm and character-rich composition by Robert Lenkiewicz, capturing a moment of camaraderie among Plymouth’s working fishermen. Set against the golden glow of a harbour sunset, the scene shows a group of men gathered with their catch, relaxed and sharing a moment of rest after the day’s labour.
Lenkiewicz’s ability to portray everyday people with dignity, humour and humanity is fully evident here. The fishermen’s clothing, the crates of fish, the seagull at their feet and the ship in the background all contribute to a vivid sense of place — the historic Barbican waterfront.
The colours are warm and atmospheric, with the sunset reflecting across the water and casting soft highlights on the figures. At 61cm × 47cm (and 90cm × 78cm framed), the artwork has a strong presence and makes a beautiful statement piece for coastal homes, living rooms, hallways or curated gallery walls.
The frame is very presentable, showing only minor age-related marks, and the print itself remains in good condition with strong colour and detail. The original Armada Galleries Certificate of Authenticity is included, confirming the edition size of 250 plus artist proofs and fishermen copies.
About the Artist
Robert Lenkiewicz (1941–2002) is one of Britain’s most distinctive figurative painters, known for his powerful project work, psychological themes and deeply human portraits. His art often focuses on real people from his local community — thinkers, bohemians, workers and those living on the margins — portrayed with honesty, warmth and emotional depth.
Lenkiewicz had a long-standing connection to Plymouth’s Barbican, and many of his works celebrate its people, culture and maritime heritage. The Barbican Fishermen 2000 is a wonderful example of this connection: a tribute to the working men who shaped the identity of the harbour.
Collectors value Lenkiewicz’s prints for their narrative richness, technical skill and strong sense of character. This edition, produced using stochastic screening and light-fast inks, offers exceptional detail and longevity, making it a standout addition to any serious Lenkiewicz collection.
