Rodrigue Mervilus (born 1947 in St. Marc, Haiti) is a highly regarded, self-taught practitioner of Haitian Folk Art, often referred to as Naïve Art. His career was notably inspired by a dream of becoming an acclaimed artist, leading him to begin painting in bright primary colours and using his distinctive "rounded figures" technique to fill busy canvases. Mervilus specialises in joyful, detailed scenes of both everyday Haitian life (market scenes) and, most notably, the dense, tropical jungle, often filled with a variety of brightly patterned wild animals. His work is recognised internationally for its vibrant, imaginative quality and has been featured in major collections, including the Huntington Museum of Art.
